What is Dysport?

Dysport, like Botox, is a neurotoxin. Both use the same active ingredient — botulinum toxin type A. Neurotoxins affect the nerves to keep the facial muscles from moving and creating wrinkles.

Dysport often targets frown lines that can form between the eyebrows. Years of frowning can lead to deep, furrowed lines here. Dysport injections stop the facial muscles from contracting in a way that causes the lines, preventing the wrinkles from forming. After the treatment, the muscles no longer contract, causing that crease.

Dysport is also FDA-approved to treat lower limb spasticity in children, spasticity in adults, and cervical dystonia, which affects the movement of the neck and head.

The Anti-Aging Benefits of Dysport

Dysport has proven anti-aging benefits because it relaxes the muscles in the face. The goal is to keep the wrinkles from forming. It also stops existing wrinkles from getting worse.

Dysport treats glabellar lines, which are the vertical wrinkles that appear between your brows during your adolescence and become more noticeable as you age due to decreased elasticity. When you squint, they become more visible, giving you a frowning or angry appearance.

The neurotoxin only affects the targeted area, though. Other muscles in the face will move normally, so you have a more natural appearance after the treatment.

Dysport vs Botox

The difference between Botox and Dysport is minor. They are both neurotoxins that treat wrinkles, as previously stated. They relax the muscles and prevent them from contracting when injected, so they do not react when you smile, laugh, or frown.

Although Botox and Dysport function similarly, the time it takes for each to take effect and the amount required for effective treatment can vary.

Botox can take up to two weeks to take hold fully, though there should be some noticeable improvements within 72 hours. In some patients, Dysport may have more immediate effects.

The amount required for treatment is perhaps the most noticeable distinction between Botox and Dysport.

Who is a Good Candidate for Dysport?

An ideal candidate for Dysport treatments is someone who has tried other options to prevent the formation of frown lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows. However, it is a very targeted treatment approach that is not suitable for every face and neck area. Someone with many problem areas might consider other treatment options, including other forms of neurotoxin injectables or fillers.

Most people begin wrinkle-treating injectables like Dysport between the ages of 35 and 65. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery reports that the number of patients using neurotoxins under the age of 30 is growing, though. The treatment is effective for both men and women.

What to Expect During a Dysport Treatment

The procedure itself only takes a few minutes. Unless you experience side effects, you are free to leave as soon as your Dysport injections almost immediately.

What to Expect After Your Treatment

Dysport has an incredible success rate. At least one 2019 study puts that rate at 88.5 percent, so most patients will see promising results in two days or earlier. The effect can last up to four months.

There is no recovery time necessary after the treatment. However, we do recommend you avoid touching the area for at least two hours after your treatment.
